00:00hi everybody this is Mindset Mastery I am Evelyn your host and today i’m so excited to welcome Zette Harbour. Hi Zette how are you doing today

00:10 Hi Evelyn i’m doing well and i’m so excited to be back with you. I have enjoyed our conversation so much i’m so excited

t00:19 thank you so much that you’re hereand for those of the listeners who were not here the last time and who don’t know who you are would you mind introducing yourself shortly no

00:29 I’m happy too. I have been a traditional, professional storyteller for over 28 years and what that means is i dive into the traditional tales around the world and find kind of inspiration and meaning from them and i also perform them and then i’m also a certified coach which means i help people look at their own stories and decide which ones they want to transform and which ones they want to keep in order to have better results in their life more happiness. you know less stress that kind of thing

01:01beautiful story story stories i love story speaking about stories you just recently published a book your first book called love lies beneath um would you tell like i wanna i wanna ask you an interesting question now how is that how is writing that book connected to your life’s purpose?

01:29thank you that’s a great questionI have wanted to write a book for a long, long time in fact being an author is just a lifetime goal dream for me i had an idea for this collection of stories that i felt had a lot of healing potential that if you dive into them they really offer a lot that can help each one of us heal our hearts uh fbut it never really took form until just this last year and it was really this combination of recognizing in my work with for myself but also my work with my clients that every time we dove into a painful stressful or fearful story when we dove deep enough what we found was love. Love had created all of the conditions and the narratives and all the protective mechanisms and that when we were able to really just go straight into that love which i really started to feel and think of as reclaiming parts of our soul that just automatically healed the heart so for so many years i had been focused on healing my heart how could i heal my heart and what was really just so just mind-blowing was that it was actually the reclaiming of the soul and it was as as sort of on a byproduct the heart was healed so i thought wow love lies beneath everything and i really want to write about that.

03:01wow that’s beautiful so tell me have you like specifically defined your purpose and what it is that you are put to do on this earth do you know that

03:14oh thank you yeah that i’ve i have felt a long for a very long time a connection to a particular kind of purpose and for many decades it really didn’t make much sense to me um but it’s has stayed with me and it’s that i i am here to be a part of the awakening of human consciousness0 whatever that looks like and back in 2016 i actually had0 a nighttime kind of visitation through a dream that gave me three rules to walk only in my own footsteps to belong to myself and to beam my light out into the world and that was sort of the the recipe of how to be a part of this awakening of0 consciousness so if i could learn to really walk on the earth in the0 way that i was meant to if i could own have possession of myself and if i could beam my light that’s when other lights would start beaming as well and i would be a core you know part of a chorus of lights shining all over the planet

04:13so so have you had those experiences?

04:18um you mean of the walking in my own footsteps or just to be yeah

04:21i mean that experience that when you light up then others light up

too oh hundred percent and and i i mean i’ve experienced it as when someone i see someone with being in their light that really raises my ability to be my light so i felt that directly and then i know that you know as i speak my truth sharing this book or telling stories or talking to people it is that light that really creates the energy for another person so yeah i’ve seen it with my clients my friends my family

04:53that’s really beautiful that’s powerful because often what happens is that we have those ideals right like we read it from some place or we just think that that would be good for us or anything like that but to have had experience something like this really makes it possible to recreate it right because you know what it is that you’re kind of um aiming for but let’s talk about let’s let’s talk a little bit more about your book. so can you tell us some story about your book about those stories?

05:27well um gosh it is so that i take the reader on a journey we start with um i lead them into the idea just the whole awareness that story is is a thing you know we we tend to be like a goldfish in a bowl of water you know if you ask that goldfish, ‘tell me about water,’ the goldfish would look at you like you were crazy because the goldfish doesn’t think there isn’t anything but water so it doesn’t understand so i feel like story is that for us we are so immersed in it it gives us the space you know it nourishes us it gives us oxygen it’s what allows us to move but we don’t very often actually understand that the story is there and so what happens is when we find our life feeling uncomfortable unsatisfying unhappy even fearful or stressful um that’s to me a direct sign that we’re not being aware that there’s some story at work here and story is always a voice of the soul. the soul only wants to call us back home to it so it will use any story it can and if it’s learned that we’ll only listen to those really upset angry stories that’s the one that we use and so the more aware we become of story and how it’s a mirror that we can look into to discover ourselves and recover ourselves the more we do that the calmer and more loving that voice can be so that’s the beginning of the book is really exploring all the ins and outs of that and then the middle section is five traditional stories that i am in love with and i’ve been in love with them for most of them for 20 years over 20 years um and so i dive into those stories and share with the reader what i have found what wisdom those stories have given to me as a way07:18of hoping to show the reader that they07:20also can dive into these stories and07:22find themselves07:23and what they find will be so different07:24than what i find but that’s the beauty07:27stories are mirrors so07:28if i look in a mirror i’m going to see07:30my face and not07:31someone else’s right so then at the end07:34i do wrap up by saying you know let’s07:35look at the brain07:36how does how does story really affect07:38the brain because it literally is deeply07:40connected to our brain function07:42um other modalities that can support you07:45in shifting your story07:46and then a little history of you know07:48why i wrote the book and where it came07:50from for me07:52thank you um do you in any way classify07:55the stories into different categories07:58like do you07:59because what what i’m like what i start08:02thinking about when you speak about08:04stories is like08:05yeah there are those stories that are08:08part of my life but there is somehow a08:10bigger story that you know08:12all of those small stories are part of08:15and08:15that’s in a way what we’re trying to do08:18here in this08:19summit is to you know to find the story08:23that helps me to focus myself on my08:25purpose you know like08:27to define that story of me that is08:29actually that consists of08:31all those small stories that08:35that have happened to me so so is there08:37like08:38any insights on on that start from like08:41could you08:42could you give any ideas um well the08:45last story i08:46share is actually um when i perform it08:48it’s like one minute long or so it’s08:50really really short but to me08:52it captures really what life is about08:55it’s called the child of salt and it’s08:57from a beautiful book that’s08:59currently out of print but is available09:01stories of the spirit stories of the09:03heart09:03collection of extraordinary beautiful09:05stories anyway this tiny little story is09:07about this child of salt09:09she knows she belongs somewhere but she09:11doesn’t know where09:12and she travels the world up and down09:15you know up the mountains through the09:16valleys across the streams through the09:18desert09:19you know in mucky boggs through briar09:22patches all09:23over the world through every environment09:25and finally09:26you know along the way she’s like no i09:28don’t belong here i don’t belong here09:30she comes to the shore and suddenly the09:33ocean just09:34calls her and she says oh and you know09:37the ocean says come closer and she steps09:38into the ocean09:40she’s a child of salt remember and so as09:42she puts her foot in the ocean she09:44starts to dissolve09:45and the ocean says come closer come09:47closer and so she walks and walks and09:48washes the ocean and just at the last09:50moment as09:51the water goes over her head dissolving09:53her completely she says09:55ah now i know who i am09:59and that’s the end of that story10:03that’s beautiful i sometimes hear that10:06calling from10:06mountains because i live in austria10:08close to uh10:09some mountains and it’s really uh10:13calling when you look at them and they10:15kind of you know10:16it feels like a magnet but so i can uh10:20relate to that feeling of the ocean10:21calling10:23that is a beautiful story so um10:26what i hear from that story in a way is10:29that10:30uh it’s like that our story that we kind10:34of wanna10:35define or redefine or10:38just write or say or know or discover10:42um that actually lies10:45in the process of our lives right10:49that’s like that’s something that i can10:51hear from that story of with the girl10:53and the ocean10:54absolutely and what’s so beautiful is as10:57tiny as that story is10:59there are so many nooks and crannies for11:01these kind of reflections11:04yeah i mean if you think about it’s such11:06a great thing that she didn’t belong in11:08any of those other places because she11:10got to experience so much11:11more because the journey took all of11:14those11:15destinations for her to reach her her11:18genuine11:18her authentic home right so yeah it is11:21that process if we can’t11:23even if it’s not home we can appreciate11:27the beauty of the mountains the beauty11:29of the forest the even the beauty of the11:31deserts right yeah11:32we get the richness from them so yeah11:34it’s a tiny little powerhouse of a story11:37that’s really beautiful because it gives11:39it’s also like11:40it gives hope in a way because um often11:44we’re also so strongly in the mind even11:47with finding our story or finding our11:49purpose or like we get so obsessed with11:51finding an ideal that we want to follow11:54in a way but actually11:56the you know the secret can often be in11:59just relaxing you know like12:00relax let it go be in peace and you will12:04feel the story within right like12:06yeah like we don’t have to so much12:10actually like pursue and try to achieve12:13but instead we want to achieve that12:16peace within so that it can just flow12:18and we can just12:19you know become the obvious yes yes12:22because i i what i’m hearing12:24you’re describing is um our idea12:26typically or very commonly12:28is that our story needs to be a heroic12:31one12:32where we vanquish some dragon or some12:35adversary right12:36we vanquish some evil some darkness and12:38so that12:39is generally speaking kind of we apply12:42that12:42without realizing it to our own inner12:44journey and yeah i love the stories that12:46tell the story of the other kind which12:48is just the presence12:50yeah to every single moment of her12:53journey12:54and then her presence is just taken to12:57the like the12:58absolute degree as she she becomes so13:02present to the ocean she’s now13:04part of it again right that’s gorgeous13:06to me13:08although i do believe that it’s also13:10beautiful to13:11um have that vision13:14you know to have even if it’s an ideal13:17it’s great to have it so that13:20you know you have something to look13:23forward to13:25because uh sometimes13:28just being in the present and13:31you know i mean i’m not saying that13:32there’s anything wrong13:34with being in the present but what i13:36mean by that like i kind of want to say13:38that13:39i think that it is also beautiful to uh13:43to have a vision because when life13:45happens and when13:46the resistance comes and stuff happens13:49that it’s great to13:50have something to you know hold on to13:53when we are while we’re struggling with13:55those other forces that are not so much13:58in the flow13:59so 100 which is why she recognizes14:03i don’t belong here i don’t want to hear14:07and she never loses that yearning that14:09powerful draw14:11to continue until she finds where she14:13belongs right14:15and when she finds where she belongs14:16that’s when she can say i know who i am14:19right so yeah i think 100 you’re you’re14:21spot on we must have this combination14:24right that’s beautiful so i already14:27mentioned14:27resistance let’s talk a little bit about14:30resistance because um now that i’ve said14:34that it’s nice to have an ideal or a14:36vision or a mission or a purpose however14:38anyone wants to14:39name it then sometimes what happens is14:42that we14:43start to expect very much uh14:46from ourselves like oh but i was14:49supposed to be that very14:51wonderful person who has it all together14:54and now14:54i’m not and then this self-doubt comes14:57in and sometimes14:58even depression or you know like there’s15:00so much resistance that we’re facing15:02um how do you say that15:06yeah i love um i love this idea i’m so15:09glad we’re talking about it um much of15:12my life15:13resistance felt like an enemy to me as i15:15think money must feel like it’s like ah15:17why are you doing this to me15:19um the folk tales have been15:23my teachers they have taught me such15:26great wisdom15:27um they have taught me that no matter15:29whether the character is like15:31good or bad so if the character is like15:34the15:34the heroine and there’s this resistant15:37figure that causes trouble in her life15:39our natural reaction in our own lives is15:41to say you know you’re bad get away15:43well in in becoming a performer of15:45folklore15:47i wanted to love all of the characters15:50equally so that i could represent them15:53with15:54you know truth and and full you know15:56respect for each the role that each15:58played15:59so it was the beginning of teaching me16:01that even what looks like a villain16:04or a troublemaker or a problem16:08has such a powerful role in my entire16:10journey16:12so then it became a process of trying to16:14learn16:15how do i how do i decode what this16:18villain or this resistance that’s16:20appearing in front of me how do i decode16:22that so i can stop seeing it as an enemy16:24and really see it for the16:25the ally that it is and so a lot of16:29you know what has made this book16:31possible is16:33really getting a full clear vision that16:37if i feel resistance it’s like a light16:41in the darkness it’s a part of my soul16:43saying hey16:44look over here so i i can’t heat that16:47right i must go oh it’s a sign so16:50i want to walk toward it again i’m not16:52suggesting that we’re looking for16:54suffering or wanting to16:55you know have life be rough and all that16:57but16:58when you’re in a position where you’re17:00able to look at resistance and say17:02ah you’re calling me to a piece of17:04myself that i’ve not17:06gone home to let me follow you and17:09find out what you want me to learn right17:12and that may sound very17:13theoretical but it’s very possible in17:16moments like17:17just two days ago i had a phone call an17:19appointment to set17:21and i know i have to do this it’s part17:23of the business of my life i know that17:25and my first feeling when i pushed the17:28button was17:29oh no i don’t want to take this stuff i17:33don’t17:33want to do this and17:37fortunately i am learning from my own17:39book i said okay17:41you know i see you i embrace you i17:43appreciate it17:44i love you thank you feeling of17:46nervousness fear17:47trepidation you’re right it is scary to17:50go into new territory you’re 100 right17:52i’m so17:53grateful that you’re here and that17:56allowed me to accept17:57i didn’t have to push away the feeling17:59or deny it but i also wasn’t stopped by18:01it so we partnered18:02instead of going head-to-head18:06beautiful so tell me what do you think18:08about breaking the comfort zone18:11oh i love it18:16because right now you’re saying that you18:18you actually appreciate that moment18:20where you feel uncomfortable right18:22like with that phone call yeah yeah18:25because18:26if i am uncomfortable it means i am18:28opening a door18:30to a new experience a new part of my18:33life it’s like that child right18:35maybe the valley was really comfortable18:37because it didn’t challenge her and18:38everything’s pretty and the birds are18:40singing and you know it’s all warm and18:41friendly18:42but her heart said no i must go on so18:44she had to leave so we all18:46have to continue the journey even when18:49we find these little comfortable places18:51um yeah it doesn’t make it right or18:53wrong it’s18:54just it’s a step on the journey it’s not18:57the whole journey18:58yeah so um i’d love to know if you have19:01any19:02practices or anything that you do19:05to consciously uh try to keep your focus19:08on19:09that vision of yours that you have for19:11yourself um19:12what i mean is that also you know19:15breaking the comfort zone19:16it has to do with that actually the19:20vision that we have for ourselves right19:22because otherwise19:23uh if my vision is not strong enough or19:25if my19:26purpose or what i want to like19:29accomplish is a very19:30doesn’t sound right in that um19:34perspective of life’s purpose but you19:37know like19:38who i want to be what is the best19:39version of myself or19:41you know like what do i value the most19:43in my life19:44and i want to embody this right19:48and if that’s not strong enough for me19:50then i don’t do those steps19:52i don’t step out of my comfort zone19:53because you know it’s cozy19:56just i want to tell you before i want to19:57share that one story i don’t remember19:59who that was but just recently i heard20:01someone say that20:02um they just brought an example20:06from you know having a goal to train20:08yourself like i want to train i want to20:10become really fit uh and then i have20:12that plan20:14and my goal is set like so and so i’m20:17gonna be20:17i’m gonna be so heavy or so light and20:20then that’s that’s gonna be my body20:22and i have a plan i’m following this but20:26then sometimes i’d love to have that20:28piece of pizza instead20:30you know because it’s not so comfortable20:33to go out there and then train you know20:35this moment of going to train or20:37whatever it is to keep yourself fit20:39you know to make that decision that i’m20:41gonna do it now it’s not20:43it’s not so easy like saying yeah i just20:45want to enjoy pizza so i just want to20:47bring that perspective20:48like in that life purpose that if that’s20:50not strong enough20:52then we choose that piece of pizza right20:54like we choose to stay in our comfort20:55zone so20:56do you have any you know like do you20:59have a very strong vision or do you have21:01any practice that helps you to you know21:03push yourself to come out of21:05but in a healthy way like not push21:06yourself to push yourself but push21:08yourself out of that comfort zone so21:10that you can grow like you say21:12yeah 100 because i have certainly21:15had plenty of time in my life where i21:17would um21:18you know brow beat myself into doing the21:21right thing21:22or i’d guilt myself or shame myself and21:24like you21:25you know you’re not being who you who21:27you should be that kind of thing right21:29to get myself21:30out um i’ve also done the powerful you21:31know the positive motivation21:33techniques but what um what i really21:36feel like21:37is it’s like connecting to a hydrogen21:38fuel cell21:40it is limitless energy that lives in the21:42core of every single one of us21:44and the word itself sounds very simple21:46but it’s your values it’s your21:48core values and i don’t mean values like21:51judge yourself by did you live up to21:54your values i21:55talk yeah right because that could be21:57another weapon of21:58you know self-harm i talk to my clients22:02and i use my values as22:04what am i doing today to nourish these22:06values22:08so first i have to be really clear on22:10what those values are and that means22:11having a conversation with them22:13so my process that i share with my22:15clients and i do22:16is to create intimacy with core values22:20you want to be so intimate it’s like22:21they are your lovers22:23yeah when you are that intimate and22:25you’ve identified where they already are22:27present in your life22:29where they’re not present you then get22:31to really go oh that’s why there’s so22:33much stress and friction and pain22:35in this part of my life because my22:36values aren’t being nourished22:38so once you have those core and we start22:41with six it you could pretty much choose22:43any number but six is what i was taught22:45to do22:46and we go through the process of having22:48that communication22:49developing that intimacy then you start22:52looking at your whole life and see22:53where those values are being nourished22:55whether or not then you make choices22:57i’m going to nourish that value so in22:58your example if the value23:01is vibrant health and power and energy23:04physically feeling fit23:05then what you do is the pizza doesn’t23:08nourish that value23:10it nourishes something different you can23:12still nourish23:13that other thing if you choose to but23:15you’re choosing23:16so that’s also where some nlp techniques23:19can come in very handy but i won’t23:20dive too deep into those but you can23:22change the way you see the pizza in your23:24mind23:25right so that it isn’t even tasty oh23:27please do dive into this23:28i’m not talking about the pizza but just23:31you know how you do23:32well this is this works specifically23:34with food um23:36you know if one has a food well it’s so23:39our brand23:39when you think of that pizza where is it23:41right now is it like written23:43where where do you think of it where do23:44you see it where23:46like yeah like if you picture the pizza23:48show use your hand and show me where the23:49picture of the pizza is yeah23:51okay and is it yeah is it in color23:55yes yeah and can you even smell it23:58i think so yeah what’s the flavor that24:01you taste24:02i could taste the cheese and yeah24:05yes it feels good huh it’s like that24:08feels good24:08right so now take that beautiful24:11colorful24:12rich juicy cheesy called picture i want24:15you to drop it down to like your lower24:17opposite corner just just take that24:19image and go24:20just even use your hand and just move24:22down yeah or even the opposite side even24:24like put it all the way on the opposite24:26side just scoop it over and down24:28now shrink it down until it’s like that24:29big tiny24:31and make it black and white and now i24:34want to make it look a little fuzzy and24:36blurry24:37yeah actually i can’t see it anymore24:40there you go so then you can add in um24:43a bad smell a smell that makes you like24:46really sick or a bad flavor24:48you assign it to that image and24:51once you do this once you complete that24:53process and we kind of zoomed through it24:55but24:55you could do this anytime with any food24:57that you feel is24:58diverting your energy from your true25:01goal25:02just understand your brain has created a25:04story25:05about that piece of food you are25:07changing the story25:08about that piece of food and that’s all25:10you have to do can we do this with other25:13things like if we choose to25:15sit around and watch netflix instead of25:18doing something that we know that we25:20should be doing for sure25:22sure because it’s really about the story25:24that our brain has about that thing25:26so if you do the same process of seeing25:29what you can see yourself sitting on the25:31couch you can see the netflix you can25:33start associating25:35you can make it gray and dingy you can25:37make it real fuzzy25:39you can shrink it you can make it feel25:41like some you know like you’re nauseous25:43you can have a terrible smell associated25:45right now if there’s something else25:47you’d rather do25:49then you bring it see the thing is your25:50pizza was right up here25:52yeah that’s a really good spot right it25:54was in color25:56and our images i didn’t ask you but i’m25:58sure you could see every25:59bit of it it wasn’t fuzzy right um so26:02you can take26:03what it is you want to be doing and put26:06it beautifully wherever it26:07makes you happy some people it’s here26:09some people it’s there26:10right make it there and not don’t just26:14see yourself but26:15taste the taste smell the smell feel the26:18textures that make you26:20happy and then really i think if you can26:23associate the joy you have around your26:24core values because if they don’t make26:26you joyful they’re not your core values26:28associate that joy and let that picture26:32come to life and that i mean just just26:34by minimizing the one you don’t want26:36and when you want you you’re going to26:39have a different energy26:40around both of them that’s so powerful i26:42love that it’s so beautiful thank you so26:44much for sharing this because26:47i think i feel that this is going to be26:50super helpful for so many people26:52because you know first of all to have26:55those core values26:56slash purpose slash vision right27:00um it’s great to fix27:03those and then create these stories27:06and those uh emotional feelings around27:09them that we want to feel27:10right because what is life actually27:13life’s about27:13feeling right like it’s the it’s the27:15emotion it’s the27:17positive loving feelings that we want to27:20experience right in our brain you know27:23when we’re happy we produce dopamine27:25right and we produce serotonin so we27:27have a really good chemical balance27:30and that allows us to take action in27:32ways that that27:33serve our purpose when we um27:36so in in creating these images what27:39we’re doing is beyond emotion right27:41we’re putting in the five senses that’s27:43the key27:44this is why i i’ve hated affirmations27:47since i was27:48in my 20s because they never worked for27:50me and i could never figure out why but27:52it was because they stayed here27:54and they were flat and so once i27:56understood that i needed to27:58have it be this multi-dimensional28:00multi-sensory28:02experience my brain just didn’t28:05understand until it became multi-sensory28:07so we’re training our brains and our28:09brains century that’s why28:11stories are so powerful because they28:13automatically trigger your senses28:15and you may not even realize it but28:17that’s why we learn best by story28:18because it28:19hits the rhythmic it hits the linguistic28:21it hits the visual it hits the you know28:23tactile it hits the um28:26all of it yeah i love it i love that28:29comparison28:30that uh affirmations like affirmations28:33are beautiful28:33and affirmations are great reminders28:36like if you use something28:37uh a sentence or a word or anything that28:40you know kind of28:41reminds you of something on a wall or28:44somewhere28:45as a daily reminder it’s beautiful and28:46it’s great but i’m i cannot agree with28:49you more that they don’t work28:50alone like this because there’s28:53something else like we need to take28:54action on them28:55they need to be connected to our vision28:58to our mission to our purpose right29:00because like otherwise29:01it’s just an affirmation but the rest is29:05has no attention so totally we’ve got to29:08get it’s got to be full contact right29:10and i actually now when i write29:12something if i want to write a statement29:14that i would like to have in my29:16consciousness every day29:17i usually put it in my iphone and my29:18calendar i say i29:20celebrate so um29:24what like when i first started writing29:26the book it was29:27i celebrate love lies beneath how29:29reclaiming my soul through story became29:31the secret to healing my heart29:32i just said that every day and we just29:34automatically see it so29:35i found that rather than saying i am29:38healthy wealthy and happy it’s i29:40celebrate being healthy and it shifted29:43everything for me29:44so i encoura i share that with all my29:47clients as well29:48that’s powerful thank you so much i’m so29:50sorry that29:51we are running out of time it always29:53happens so fast29:54but this is a great thing about those29:56interviews because they don’t take too29:58much time from anyone but they give30:01so much value and so much inspiration30:04to everyone to just follow um30:08on their path of defining and pursuing30:11their30:12core values their love that lies beneath30:15so please i know that there is something30:18that you want to share with our audience30:20what is it that you are giving away30:22thank you thank you i30:24would love i i pulled it up on the ipad30:25so i could show the picture30:27beautiful thank you yeah i have an30:30excerpt30:31uh it’s part of the beginning of the30:32book the creating the map of30:35where this book will take you and i feel30:37like there’s lots of30:38wonderful treasures and nuggets in there30:41for anyone who wants to read it
